The Question of Captaincy

As normal during the international break there’s not much going on at club level so discussions on message boards tend to slide towards formations, tactics, dream signings and occasionally pornography. We’re lucky that we managed to sign Van der Vaart at the last minute, not only on the playing side of things but he’s given us plenty to talk about, not excluding whether his wife is now the best looking WaG at the club.

One of the discussions on our forum was based loosely around Dawson’s injury and who will be captain when he’s out? Obviously, he’s only captain when King is injured but given the likelihood of King missing half the games Dawson is out for, who does Harry give the armband to then?

In the past it’s normally been given to Modric, although that’s probably more to do with his experience than anything else. He’s also currently injured, with reports saying he may return for Croatia tonight but always expect the worse when players come back from international duty.

So lets say hypothetically, that King, Dawson and Modric are injured. Is there anyone else in the squad that’s suitable? Huddlestone maybe? He’s in a central position and could lead from there but he’s hardly a talker on the pitch and his laid back style isn’t going to get those around him fighting. Defoe? I’ve never liked strikers as captain unless they’re by far the stand our option, aka Lineker or Shearer. That’s it though isn’t it?

Fear not, my faint hearted reader, there is one man who ‘Arry can call upon to rescue the armband from obscurity. William Gallas. *oh no you didn’t!!!* Unfortunately, yes I did. I can’t imagine many things worse than that to be honest but if he’s playing is there anyone else with more experience at the top level, in the premier league or at being a captain? We all know Redknapp won’t consider how we feel on the subject, and that’s probably right with regards to a captain, but it does show what our current squad lacks. Leadership.

Leaders are what you need to beat Wigan at home when the 11 players out there are having a shocker. Leaders are what made United dominate English football in the nineties and Liverpool before them. Their teams were full of leaders. Our’s however, isn’t. Thankfully a captain in football isn’t the same as a captain in cricket or rugby. No decisions have to be made that will effect the team, all you have to do is be the leader as best you can. So when it happens, don’t get your knickers in a twist that an ex Wanderers captain has now got our armband because I gave you plenty of advanced warning, even if it’s only one the odd game.

The King of White Hart Lane

So Ledley King has signed a new contract meaning he’ll remain at the club until 2012, at which time he’ll be approaching 32 and probable retirement.

What a difference a few months make! I was one of the many who believed the club captain and only current graduate of our academy should be offered a “pay-as-you-play” type of contract before being asked to take a more active role in coaching rather than playing. However, after 20 appearances this season, 19 having been in the league, our kneeless wonder now looks likely to not only be on his way to the world cup with England but there’s a very good chance he’ll start the first game.

We all know when he’s fit, he is without doubt the best defender England has to offer. We’ve been able to see that whenever he’s played this season. He exudes a calmness onto others around him. The likes of Dawson and Bassong can only learn from a man that can’t train but somehow manages to put in man of the match performances against some of Europe’s top strikers on a Saturday.

Much like Paul McGrath, he’s been referred to as a “freak”. It shouldn’t be possible. The rest of the English Premiership train everyday to keep their levels of fitness up and work together to make sure they’re not all over the place tactically come match day. King’s so good that instead of other players giving him advice on how they’ve been planning to combat their next opponent he simply walks onto the pitch and makes everyone else, including the opposition dance to his tune.

I’ve always wondered what would’ve happened had he not had his injury problems. I know he now says, “I have been here since I was a schoolboy and I could never see myself going anywhere else.”, but I’m not so sure about that. He was never like some other defenders we’ve had and if he had left the club he wouldn’t have done so in a way to alienate every last supporter but when he was consistently getting into the England team and playing week in week out, Manchester United were being linked with him regularly. If his knees hadn’t gone 4 or 5 seasons ago would he have left to challenge for honours like so many before him? I guess we’ll never know, and while my head says he probably would have, my heart likes to think the thought of leaving has never crossed his mind.

Not that if he has thought at times in his career about leaving to play Champions League football and win trophies, would make him any less the man or player he is in my eyes. I’ve never had a problem with players leaving if they’re honest and say that’s what they’re leaving for. It’s not about money to all players. Believe it or not £60,000 per week is enough to some players, and they want to have medals as well as the luxury mansion and fleet of cars that go with being a professional footballer. I think King is one of these players. Some would say a dying breed and maybe they’re right, but for the simple fact Ledley has fought through the pain and frustration just so he can walk out at White Hart Lane and be the King, even if it’s only every other weekend the man deserves a new contract and loyalty from a club that loves him more than any other ever could.

It’s not often you appreciate you’re watching a future Hall of Fame member. A living legend still pulling on the jersey with pride whenever they can. I think we all know what Tottenham Hotspur means to Ledley King, I hope a new 2 year contract to a player who can’t guarantee fitness, gives King an idea of what he means to Tottenham Hotspur.
