As normal during the international break there’s not much going on at club level so discussions on message boards tend to slide towards formations, tactics, dream signings and occasionally pornography. We’re lucky that we managed to sign Van der Vaart at the last minute, not only on the playing side of things but he’s given us plenty to talk about, not excluding whether his wife is now the best looking WaG at the club.
One of the discussions on our forum was based loosely around Dawson’s injury and who will be captain when he’s out? Obviously, he’s only captain when King is injured but given the likelihood of King missing half the games Dawson is out for, who does Harry give the armband to then?
In the past it’s normally been given to Modric, although that’s probably more to do with his experience than anything else. He’s also currently injured, with reports saying he may return for Croatia tonight but always expect the worse when players come back from international duty.
So lets say hypothetically, that King, Dawson and Modric are injured. Is there anyone else in the squad that’s suitable? Huddlestone maybe? He’s in a central position and could lead from there but he’s hardly a talker on the pitch and his laid back style isn’t going to get those around him fighting. Defoe? I’ve never liked strikers as captain unless they’re by far the stand our option, aka Lineker or Shearer. That’s it though isn’t it?
Fear not, my faint hearted reader, there is one man who ‘Arry can call upon to rescue the armband from obscurity. William Gallas. *oh no you didn’t!!!* Unfortunately, yes I did. I can’t imagine many things worse than that to be honest but if he’s playing is there anyone else with more experience at the top level, in the premier league or at being a captain? We all know Redknapp won’t consider how we feel on the subject, and that’s probably right with regards to a captain, but it does show what our current squad lacks. Leadership.
Leaders are what you need to beat Wigan at home when the 11 players out there are having a shocker. Leaders are what made United dominate English football in the nineties and Liverpool before them. Their teams were full of leaders. Our’s however, isn’t. Thankfully a captain in football isn’t the same as a captain in cricket or rugby. No decisions have to be made that will effect the team, all you have to do is be the leader as best you can. So when it happens, don’t get your knickers in a twist that an ex Wanderers captain has now got our armband because I gave you plenty of advanced warning, even if it’s only one the odd game.
