In all the fuss over who’s leaving The Lane, one increasingly likely transfer seems to have slipped off the radar a little.
Perhaps no one can quite believe that after what seems like an eternity, but we might be buying a striker. Maybe I should have told you to take a seat.
Someone said to me that they were excited by the prospect of his arrival because he was unknown. Each to their own, but that would scare the bejeesus out of me. So for anyone who does want to know more, here it is.
Leandro Damiao is a 21 year old Brazil international currently plying his trade with our Brazilian affiliate Internacional.
It appears that a deal in the region of £9m is being hashed out and could be sorted before the Copa America kicks off on July 1st.
Many Brazilian strikers follow a familiar path and are spotted as wonderkids at an early age. They are feted, hyped via YouTube and then burst onto the world stage, sometimes to stunning effect, Pato and Robinho being good examples.
Well Leandro Damiao isn’t one of them.
At 17 he was a gangly midfielder struggling to get a pro contract. After failing yet another trial he bugged the club president to give him another try, the president was impressed with his determination and agreed.
The coach asked him to try out upfront, doing well enough to earn a contract and set about scoring goals in the lower leagues.
At 6 foot 2 and muscular he is more a prototype English centre forward than a stereotypical Brazilian. He has a decent technique, is a real threat in the air (are you reading Peter Crouch?) and has a poachers instinct in front of goal. He doesn’t have electric pace but is quick once he gets going and knows his way around the penalty area.
After tearing up the lower leagues in Brazil, he was picked up by Internacional and was placed in their reserve squad. He then burst to prominence in the Copa Libertadores triumph last year for Inter. Yes the one that kept Sandro in Brazil for longer than we’d have liked. Leandro wasn’t even sure he’d be a sub for the second leg of the final, but came on in the second half and slotted home the title clinching goal.
Despite his impact he still wasn’t guaranteed to be a regular for Inter this season but took his chance early on and has scored better than 1 every 2 games. This impact saw him get his first call up for the Brazil squad to play Scotland at The Emirates. Brazil coach Mano Menezes had this to say of him ‘Leandro Damaio belongs to a rare family of strikers that are hard to find in Brazilian football. You need someone with his strength and penalty area presence.’
As we saw with Sandro, he would need time to settle in, and his almost overnight success does make you wonder if he can sustain the development. It would be important not to hang all our hopes on him, particularly in the first half of the season. He would also require a work permit, not a formality, but his expected inclusion in the Copa America squad could provide a useful argument.
If we are operating with a sensible transfer policy, then he would be our ‘junior striker’ signing and would I assume rule out the much rumoured Wickham bid. Not sure how I feel about this, Wickham has bags of potential and moving from Suffolk to London would be marginally less of a culture shock than moving from Porto Alegre. Whatever, I would still expect us to be looking for a proven top level striker.
Whether the deal goes through or not is still up in the air. It would be a risk but every transfer can be seen as one, I for one think he could be a good addition to our squad and hasten the departure of at least one of our current frontmen. I’ve mentioned Sandro a couple of times and he could play a key role in convincing his friend to join us and he would be vital in helping the striker settle.
We could all be dancing to the Samba beat soon enough.

Interesting as not heard of rumour or player actually Stu.
If it works out like Sandro then we could be onto a winner and star. Hopefully it won’t be a stepping stone to move on to one of Europes elite clubs as we qualify for CL football again!
Maybe our our partnership with clubs around the worl will bear fruit and save us some money. We shall all see what else occurs in the summer merry go round.
Our agreement with Internac. means we have 1st dibs. Sandro was quoted as having only great things to say about him. Why not give him a shot??
Good article.
Yes he looks quality and would like to see him in a Spurs shirt next season.
However he shouldn’t be the only striker we sign in the summer and shouldn’t be our ‘stellar signing’. We must sign Aguero to take the pressure of this guy if/when he comes to Spurs as he might have the same thing as Sandro- finishing the Copa Libertoes(whatever it is called) meaning he will come back in October having a months rest ready for Spurs in November so it is important that we don’t put all our eggs in the same basket and sign Aguero as he will score at least 20 goals in a Spurs shirt next season.
@ilovespurs Can you realistically see us getting Aguero? We have low wages in comparison to others who are after him and we have no champions league football.
Aguero? No. Not happening. Unfortunately he is way out of our league.
Just to answer your other point, Internacional are already out of the Libertadores so no delay, although if he goes to Copa America he won’t be finished til 24th July.
I agree, though Aguero would be a great buy, it would never happen. In all honesty, I’ve heard nothing about this; then again, it’s the one’s you hear nothing about that end up going through (VDV)
Had some Brazillians in the Taxi after CL final. Not Internacional fans but said Leandro is a seriously good player.
As you mentioned in the article I think this entire deal hinges on what’s better for the club, Leandro or Wickham. Both similar players, both similar prices but one is 3-4 years younger and English.
As you say, any transfer can be seen as a gamble, especially when dealing with players 17 or 21 as both those are but personally given the acclimatisation one would need over the other plus the 4 years in age difference I’d prefer we bought Wickham as a back up striker.
Nothing again Leandro who could possibly be the next big thing but there’s less risk paying the reported £13m for an English player unproven in the top English league than there is paying the same for a Brazilian with no experience whatsoever of English football.
Some good points by the good Dr, its all hypotheticals at the moment.
To me the big question is what is wrong with our current strikers. Players don’t just become rubbish overnight and you can bet your bottom dollar that if we flogged the likes of Defoe they would go on to be prolific, Darren Bent for instance! Look how Van der vaart’s consitency has dropped the longer he has been with us. There is clearly some kind of issue with training or maybe confidence that is causing this because on paper we still have one of the best strike forces in the league!
@Paul
The strikers we’ve currently got at the club are fine. There’s nothing wrong with them at all, unless you want to be competing at the top of the league. Unfortunately, none of them have ever really been what you’d call top4 quality. It was plainly obvious to most that we needed 1 or 2 new strikers this time last year. Darren Bent has been no more prolific for any other team than he was for us so that example doesn’t really equate to anything the club does in general, after all he was our top scorer when we sold him.
Training or confidence could be an issue but then why would the likes of Modric, Ekotto, Sandro etc good form be down too? The vdV situation has a lot to do with his overall fitness I think. Now whether that’s because of training or a lack of a pre-season we’ll know this time next season.
On paper our strike force is about the 5/6th best in the league which is where we are. If we want to improve our finishing position we need to improve that area of our team.
WHERE POSSIABLE WE MUST TRY AND SIGN THE BEST STRIKER WE CAN AFFORD BOTH WAGES WISE AND TRANSFER WISE , AND STILL SIGN WICKHAM HE IS THE FUTURE OR INDEED IF HE COULD SPRING ONTO THE PREMIERSHIP LIKE ROONEY DID OR WILTSHERE DID OR MOST OF THOSE YOUNG GUYS DID .
Our strikers are no way 5th/6th best in the league, personally Bent and Agbonlahor are better than our strikers, and Elmander, Sturridge and Davies are better too, add to that Zamore and Dembele.
Our strikers dont score goals and therefore are worthless, Defoe has never been prolific, nor has Crouch and Pav is just too lazy.
I personally would go for Leandro over Wickham, Leandro is in the Brazil team, Wickham isnt even anywhere near our crappy national team squad.
I would get Drogba with him and then a quick striker as an option for balls over the top, Gameiro looks quite good
I believe affliate is not a proper word for Internacional, we are a kind of partners.
I’m an Internacional fan and I can say Damiao is getting more and more impressive, you can tell by the last game this week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHp4guhe3gg
Sou brasileiro e Colorado do Internacional! Simpatizo muito com este grande clube ingles! Acredito que o futuro de Leandro Damigol seja o Tottenhan ao lado do seu amigo Sandro. Fututo brilhante e promissor no berço do futebol!
Um abraço a todos na Inglaterra!
Vamo Inter!
