Boring, Boring Spain?

As it’s the World Cup final on Sunday I just wanted to air my thoughts on the teams involved. In simple terms I’ll put it this way, Holland are like Stoke and Spain are like, ummm Stoke.

Strange? Maybe, but hear me out.

Holland have spent most of the competition kicking their opposition in the air and somehow not getting punished for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Howard Webb brandishes a red card. They have 7/8 defensive players and basically they all stay back and kick the ball to the other guys who are left to try and score.

Spain have developed a style that has most of the world purring and salivating over. However, I think a major flaw in their play is being missed by most.

What’s the great, classic quote from Danny Blanchflower?

“The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.”

Well I’m sorry but as far as I’m concerned, being a football watcher, being a neutral who can appreciate good football and great passing etc all I see is Spain waiting for the other team to die of boredom before they score a goal.

Very rarely do they get more than 1 player in the box. It may be pretty intricate football but is it exciting? Is it entertainment? No. Before the Germany v Spain semi final all the press were saying it was going to be a classic. I couldn’t see that myself. It looked like it would be another boring game involving Spain.

Yes, they passed it around beautifully, especially in the second half and kept the ball well but did they at any point really rip open the German defence? After they went 1-0 up they did but that was only once the Germans were pushing men forward for the equaliser.

Football is a sport yes, but it’s more than just that. It’s a major part of the entertainment industry. It’s all very well knocking the Premier League every time a major international tournament is played for lack of skill and passing etc but the reason it’s the biggest league in the world is the fact it entertains it’s viewers. The World Cup hasn’t done that. What’s wrong with end to end matches with plenty of goal mouth action? Teams stretched to breaking point? Of course there’s going to be misplaced passes when a game’s like that but they’re the games that get spectators off their seats. What Spain do isn’t the beautiful game as it was meant to be, as much as idealists would lead us to believe. It’s effective yes, but then so is the Stoke long throw in.

So, I expect on Sunday the current best footballing team in the world, Spain, to be crowned world champions and while I’ll watch the game, that’s more based on the fact its either that or Big Brother, rather than the prospect of a great football match.

Roll on August 14th when a real spectator sport, The English Premier League kicks off again. It might be filled with tackles from behind, misplaced passes and defensive errors but at 100mph I’ll be watching with a smile on my face.

Driving a Hard Bargain

We wake up this morning to the news that a lot of us thought possible. Daniel Levy is a money making, business genius. Yes that’s right. Everything Levy does is in the interest of the club. Most spurs fans came to that conclusion some time ago with some of his transfer dealings but with the news that we may start the season without a main sponsor his business acumen has come to the fore once again.

We’ve all been waiting for the club to put the new kit on sale but it’s apparent the delay has come from Levy not being able to sign a deal with a new sponsor once the old Mansion deal ran out.

It’s clear Levy wants an improvement on the £8.5m deal he had with Mansion. After all the club is in the champions league. Of course we’re not quite there yet which will be the stumbling block. Seems strange to me anyway because as a club we’re constantly in the press and on tv one way or another.

Rumours are abound too that Levy is considering a ground breaking deal with various companies. The idea is to have a different sponsor for each competition. Brilliant. So much so i wonder why this has never happened before? Obviously the premier league would be the biggest one due to the 38 game certainty, whereas the other competitions could end very early.

Either way, it looks like we could play our first few games without a sponsor, at least until both the club and potential sponsors know whether we’re champions league proper or not.

The massive bonus i can see from the clubs point of view on this is the amount of shirt sales they would make if they put it on sale without a sponsor. How about with a sponsor but that sponsor is the Tottenham Trust? Even though that wouldn’t make any money it would be a nice gesture of the club bringing that great organisation to the public and possibly helping them generate more money.

Either way, it’s clear Levy is willing to hold out for the biggest and best deal for the club. Whether he’s trying to tie in the new stadium sponsorship at the same time i doubt only because planning permission hasn’t even been approved yet.

There are some money men that should stay away from the game but there are some, like Levy, who as far as Spurs are concerned can stay for a while yet.

Hurry Up Already

Six weeks today will be the eve of the new Premier League season and it can’t come quickly enough. This summer seems to be lasting longer than any summer I can remember. Normally when there’s an international tournament it quells the pain of no football at White Hart Lane but due in part to some terrible football, most of it played by the England team, the 2010 World Cup hasn’t done that for me.

After the Burnley match I was slightly melancholy but looking forward to a few weekends where I wouldn’t feel the need to bite my finger nails until they bled out of sheer nervousness. The battle for that 4th place was far more tiring and stressful on the fans than it was to the players.

Just ask my doctor. In the lead up to the Man City away game I was getting some serious heart palpitations, including what felt like a heart attack after Ledley King scored the equaliser at Old Trafford. My life flashed before my eyes and I’m sure the only reason it kept beating was because my body realised it didn’t want to die in Manchester. The Doc said it was all down to stress but I couldn’t figure out what I was stressed about. I’m quite laid back in most cases and friends would joke it’s probably the football. Of course it wasn’t. However, as soon as we clinched that 4th place the palpitations stopped. Hmmm, interesting. I can only presume if we ever win the league I’ll die just before the last deciding game and will miss it all.

Anyway, the anticipation of the new season is now gaining speed. Since England went out of the World Cup the papers have started with their rumour whoring a lot more. Spurs, as always, are linked with everyone, whether it be someone we might be looking at or someone we clearly have no interest in. Most of this is done through agents but this week we even had the club president of Palermo stating we’d made an offer for 2 of their star players and they’d accepted it. The following day, the club had to come out and deny these allegations. Either Palermo have got very confused or the whoring is getting out of control.

It’s great though isn’t it? We have of course got to hope the FA keep hold of Capello or we may lose Redknapp which would put our pre-season and possibly any chances of another successful season in jeopardy. With our first pre season game  only 8 days away in Bournemouth the fun can soon begin. Obviously the World Cup players will still be on holiday I would expect by the time that game kicks off but the likes of Modric, Bentley, Bale etc will all be strutting their stuff preparing for what is one of the biggest seasons of their club careers.

Then there’s the excitement of a new kit. In the few decades that clubs have produced replica shirts the unveiling of your teams new kit has got to be up their with the more exciting parts of the summer. Except of course if the new design is horrible or the shirt is made out of some sort of stretchy skin tight superhero material that makes even the most toned of men look like they’ve got bigger boobs than their Mrs. We’ve all seen the “leaked” images of Spurs 2010/11 kit and most reactions have been positive although all that could change if and when a sponsor is sorted. No red please Mr Levy.

The On-Sale dates have been announced so we can all work out how much money we can afford to throw at the club so we can experience another tumultuous season. The Champions League qualifying draw in a months time is another massive moment in not only this season but potentially the clubs history.

It’s all building up to the massive kick off against Manchester City. Oh the irony. Hmmm, is that actually irony? Coincidence maybe? Whatever it is, it makes for a cracking opener and one I’m sure Sky will grab with both hands. Stoke away for the first away game. Last season’s result and weekend in Stoke for yours truly was excellent so I’ll be hoping for more of the same this time around.

In 8 weeks we’ll just be into the new season but it’ll feel like a lifetime already. Whatever happens at White Hart Lane in 2010/11 I just wish it would come here quicker than it is at the moment. Boring, boring summer. Boring, boring summer.
